It used to be unseemly for lawyers to badger clients about unpaid bills. For a profession that measures its worth in hourly fractions, lawyers have been surprisingly wimpy about collections. “Lawyers think it seems unprofessional; they fear offending clients,” says consultant H. Edward Wesemann.

Taking the next step–suing a client for nonpayment–has always been considered taboo. A lawsuit means the end of a client relationship, bad publicity, and quite often a counterclaim for malpractice.
