In “Memo to Firm Leaders: Don’t Go Overboard,” Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe partner Patricia Gillette addressed law firm layoffs. Gillette, a regular contributor to The Am Law Daily, wrote that firms have missed two critical points. Layoffs should be strategic, so that the firm’s core business can be carried out successfully in the future. Moreover, layoffs change a firm’s culture forever. “Law firms should first be evaluating whether layoffs are even necessary, instead of assuming that they are,” Gillette wrote.
