Latham & Watkins, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, and about 20 other major firms in Los Angeles have received visits over the past eight months from Charles “Tim” McCoy, Jr., presiding judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court system. McCoy wore a business suit, but perhaps his black robe–along with a black hood–would have been more fitting.

Over the course of an hour-long PowerPoint presentation, McCoy sketched out the court system’s dire budget situation, and how it will affect the firms. “I told them they have to be concerned about the ability of their clients to have their matters decided in a timely manner,” says McCoy. “These firms depend on clients looking to the court system.”
