Why stop at 20 top firms? That was our question when we compiled the scores of our eighth annual A-List, our effort to look beyond pure dollars to quantify the qualities that define the most successful law firms. Of course we want to celebrate the best of the best, but when the total score of the firm ranked number 21 (Boies, Schiller & Flexner) is one half percent below our 20th ranked A-List firm (Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe), it makes sense to celebrate the firms right below the top 20. Thus, we compiled the Up-and-Comers, a list of the firms that ranked in spots 21 to 50, according to our A-List criteria.

The methodology behind both our A-List and Runners Up is relatively simple. We look at four factors: revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment, diversity among lawyers, and associate satisfaction. Our formula gives more weight to the first two factors: We double a firm’s scores for revenue per lawyer and pro bono, and then add scores for diversity and associate satisfaction. This is the second year that we have given more weight to a firm’s minority partners, as opposed to counting all minority lawyers in domestic offices equally, when measuring a firm’s diversity.
