Associate salaries remained largely flat between 2009 and 2010, according to data released Thursday by the National Association for Law Placement. In its latest salary survey, NALP reports that $160,000 remains the median starting salary at large law firms in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C., but the median has dropped back to $145,000 in other markets such as Boston and San Francisco.

NALP executive director James Leipold says salaries have come down in a small but measurable way. Even in markets where $160,000 prevails as the median starting salary for first-years, more firms offered starting salaries of $130,000 to $145,000 than last year. The South, where the median was $135,000, was the only region where median first-year salaries at the largest firms fell below $160,000, according to NALP’s data.
