We asked top practitioners across the spectrum of litigation areas to tell us the cases they are watching most closely right now. Which cases are most likely to move the dial in developing areas of law? Which cases are the highest stakes? While we received dozens of suggestions, several cases were mentioned again and again. Here they are: cases testing the validity of state immigration laws, the Environmental Protection Agency’s new greenhouse emissions regulations, and generic drug approval procedures; attempting to extend liability for losses in the subprime mortgage crisis to parties thought to be beyond the reach of the law; an appeal of the dismissal of Viacom International, Inc.’s billion-dollar infringement claim against Google Inc. that could shape future online copyright laws; and Exxon Mobil Corporation’s multibillion-dollar restitution claim against the government of Venezuela. — Julie Triedman
