It took more than two months of serious talks, but Cleveland-based Squire, Sanders & Dempsey and the United Kingdom’s Hammonds finally made it official on November 8: They will join forces in the year’s third transatlantic merger.

After the merger, which takes effect January 1, the new firm will be called Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, except in jurisdictions such as the U.K., continental Europe, and Asia, where Hammonds has a presence. There, the firm will be known as Squire Sanders Hammonds. All told, the new entity—which had combined 2009 gross revenue of $625 million—will have some 1,275 lawyers spread across 37 offices in 17 countries.
