Litigator in the Spotlight
In June retired Maine lawyer Thomas Cox, representing a pro bono client in foreclosure proceedings, deposed the GMAC ­Mortgage LLC employee who handled the foreclosure. To Cox’s shock, the employee admitted preparing hundreds of foreclosures a day that hadn’t been reviewed by anyone. “I walked out of that deposition, and I was just stunned,” says Cox. Exposing GMAC’s foreclosure mills has sparked federal and state investigations into so-called robo-signing and prompted some banks to halt foreclosures temporarily. “Maybe we have a chance to make substantial change,” Cox says.
