Dechert, which already has an office in Munich, says that it is looking to open a second German base in Frankfurt this year. Bingham McCutchen and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan–two firms not exactly known for aggressive international expansion–recently picked Germany as the site for their second offices in Europe, after London. Quinn Emanuel debuted in Mann-heim in February 2010 with a patent litigation offering headed by former Allen & Overy partner Marcus Grosch, and Bingham followed in July, establishing a restructuring and financial services practice in Frankfurt after hiring a partner-led team from Broich Bezzenberger. Even the doomed Howrey opened its last new office in Düsseldorf last summer.
“Germany is one of the largest economies in Europe and also the world,” says Bingham chair Jay Zimmerman. “We always enter markets in a very measured, focused way, but Germany has been very active in cross-border restructuring, so we figured it was an appropriate time for us.”
