The way Douglas Kmiec sees it, he stuck his neck out for President Barack Obama. He would have liked the president to have returned the ­favor.

Kmiec is a constitutional scholar and an ardent opponent of abortion rights. He was a lawyer for presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and the former dean of the law school at The Catholic University of America. So it seemed like a bizarre pairing when, during the 2008 election, Kmiec threw in with Obama, rather than Republican John McCain.
