Over the centuries, Istanbul, the only major city to span two continents, has been home to scores of cultures, travelers, and traders. A more recent addition to this historic hub: international law firms.

In April, Clifford Chance became the latest firm to open its doors in Turkey. It’s likely that Chadbourne & Parke will be next. Firms are following on the heels of DLA Piper and Kinstellar, a Linklaters spin-off, which opened in Istanbul in 2010. They joined French firms Salans and Gide Loyrette Nouel, which arrived in 2008, and White & Case—the pioneer that has had offices in both Istanbul and Ankara, the country’s capital, since 1983. All of the firms have a local firm as an alliance partner, since foreign law firms are prohibited from practicing local law in Turkey.
