This summer I met with ten Canadian law firms, including some 25 partners and firm leaders. I learned a few important things. “The Stampede” isn’t just the social event of the season in Calgary—it’s also the richest rodeo event in the world. I didn’t know that the purse for the chuck wagon race alone tops $1 million. And Toronto’s restaurant scene wowed even this New York foodie.

But the most interesting part of the trip was learning about how busy the Canada firms are. Many lawyers reminded me—without any prodding—that the recession didn’t wallop their economy in the same way that it assaulted the United States. Credit didn’t freeze, and capital markets weren’t paralyzed. Plus, emerging countries’ interest in Canada’s oil, gas, mining, and “rare earths” has meant a bonanza of work for local lawyers in recent years.
