Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Freehills and Minter Ellison have advised on a $28 billion deal by which a consortium of oil companies–Chevron Corp., Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Apache Corp. and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co.–has agreed to finance the Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project in Western Australia. Mallesons acted for Chevron, which is investing $20 billion. Freehills Perth partner Justin Little advised Apache on its $3.6 billion investment. Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Co., which will have a $2 billion stake, turned to Minter Ellison partner Duncan Maclean (now at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey). Shell’s investment is $1.7 billion. Mallesons Stephen Jaques and Freehills also advised on a $511 million project to develop the gas-fired Diamantina power station in Queensland, Australia. Mallesons energy partner Craig Rogers, who is based in Brisbane, advised a joint venture between Sydney-based electricity retailer AGL Energy Ltd. and APA Group, an infrastructure company specializing in the natural gas business. The firm is representing the joint venture on all aspects of the development including project finance arrangements. AGL Energy was advised by Freehills partner Rob Merrick, who worked closely with in-house lawyers Chris Reynolds and Kirstin Mann. APA Group turned to Clifford Chance Sydney partner Mark Pistilli.
