Corrs Chambers Westgarth is representing British American Tobacco PLC (BAT) in a lawsuit against the Australian government over plain packaging legislation, two weeks after rival tobacco firm Philip Morris International Ltd. launched its own action.

The Australian government has introduced legislation that obliges tobacco producers to package cigarettes and other tobacco products in plain brown packets, without logos and other brand imagery. The standard packaging will also feature a prominent and graphic health warning. The law is due to come into effect in December 2012, and aims to make tobacco less appealing to consumers, particularly young people.
