When it comes to technology, what happens in Vegas seldom stays in Vegas—and this year, that’s a particularly good thing. As it does each January, the International Consumer Electronics Show rolled into town, showcasing new technologies that will hit the market over the coming months. Historically, the products unveiled at CES haven’t always lived up to their hype—remember netbooks, anyone?—but 2012 is shaping up to be a year where vendors actually put some brawn behind the buzz. Lawyers, especially, will reap the rewards, since some of the most highly touted CES technologies could also have the biggest impact on the way they do their job. Here’s what to watch for.

4G Networks. Even though mobile devices have become increasingly powerful, their performance has been held back by the speed of cellular networks. Current 3G networks were designed to handle data (downloading attachments and viewing Web sites, for example), and they do, but relatively slowly. Most 3G systems offer speeds far below the average household WiFi network. That’s a serious drawback for business users. The new 4G networks being rolled out by all of the major U.S. providers promise to significantly change the equation.
