Crown Castle International Corp., a leading operator of cell phone towers in the United States, announced Friday that it has agreed to acquire NextG Networks Inc., whose antenna systems enhance the wireless reach of such towers, from a group of investors led by Madison Dearborn Partners.

The transaction-which, according to Crown Castle, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2012-is the second major telecom deal announced this month. As The Am Law Daily previously reported, Verizon Wireless announced on December 2 that it has agreed to pay $3.6 billion to acquire wireless spectrum licenses from a consortium that includes Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks.
