ANDREW SCHILLING, formerly chief of the civil division of the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan, has joined BuckleySandler as a partner in the firm’s New York office.

Schilling’s arrival follows that of former head of the Security and Exchange Commission’s market intelligence office Thomas Sporkin, who joined the firm’s Washington, D.C., office as a partner earlier this month. In annoucing the hires, BuckleySandler is touting their government experience as a potential boon to the firm as it takes on more work related to evolving financial regulations, including the implementation of provision of the Dodd-Frank Act and changes in investigative and enforcement procedures related to securities.

A trial attorney, Schilling has experience in matters related to civil rights, organized crime, bankruptcy, employment discrimination, First Amendment, and official misconduct cases. While serving as chief of the civil division in the Southern District of New York, he established the office’s new civil frauds unit, which investigated and prosecuted financial fraud cases, and supervised lawsuits and investigations against major finical institutions. He was also responsible for supervising 57 assistant U.S. attorneys across eight units.

Nanavati, who was previously in the western criminal enforcement section of the DOJ’s tax division, joins Baker’s tax controversy and litigation practice, where he will advise clients on matters including tax fraud investigations, criminal and civil tax disputes, and corporate internal investigations of tax- and finance-related matters.

Covington & Burling
‘s corporate practice has expanded with the appointment of GABRIEL MESA as of counsel in the firm’s New York office. Mesa will advise clients on joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions in the U.S., Latin America, and emerging markets. He was previously at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.

Dickstein Shapiro has strengthened its business litigation capabilities in New York with the addition of DON ABRAHAM as counsel and JEFFREY MITCHELL as partner. Abraham specializes in business and commercial litigation, and Mitchell focuses on commercial litigation. Both attorneys join Dickstein from Gibbons.

THOMAS WHITE heads to Dinsmore Shohl‘s Lewisburg, Pennsylvannia office, where he will be a partner. Previously at the Law Offices of Thomas White, he specializes in litigation, with a focus on corporate law and defense-oriented litigation.

Drinker Biddle & Reath
has expanded its intellectual property practice with the addition of SCOTT THOMPSON as a partner in New York. Previously at Greenberg Traurig, Thompson focuses on an array of IP issues, includign domestic and international trademark and brand management, multi-country IP transactions, and lawsuits and administrative proceedings.

Faegre Baker Daniels has added to its real estate and construction team in Indianapolis with the hire of JOHN HIRSCHMAN as counsel. Previously at real estate developer Browning Investments Inc., Hirschman will represent clients in debt and equity financing transactions, leasing transactions, and acquisition and disposition transactions related to the real estate industry.

Corporate immigration attorney LAWRENCE BASTONE has been appointed an of counsel in Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen and Loewy‘s Boston outpost, where he will focus on providing clients with strategic immigration services and advice. He was previously at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo.

BEONG-SOO KIM
, former chief of the major frauds section for the U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles, has moved to Jones Day, where he will be a partner in the issues and appeals practice in the firm’s Los Angeles office. As a trial and appellate lawyer, Kim has handled cases involving securities law, financial institutions, health care, trade secret theft, money laundering, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, among other matters.

K&L Gates has gained ELLEN DARLING and BRENDAN FORD, both formerly at Snell & Wilmer, as partners in the firm’s product liability practice. Darling focuses on product liability litigation for health care companies, and also has experience in medical malpractice cases for health care providers and laboratories. Ford also specializes in representing various health care companies in product liability cases, as well as defending medical providers in false advertising and related negligence claims. They will be based in the firm’s Orange County, California office.

DANIEL RAGLAN is the newest partner at Kelley Drye & Warren‘s New York office. Formerly a partner at Torys, Raglan is a transactional attorney who represents clients in securities offerings, acquisitions, and other commercial transactions within the U.S. and abroad.

Latham & Watkins
welcomes SARAH GAGAN as a partner in its corporate department. Gagan, who will be based in Boston, specializes is technology and intellectual property transactions. She was previously at Bingham McCutchen.

McCarter & English has added patent attorneys GERALD LEVY and KEITH MCWHA as partners and RONALD BROWN as special counsel. All three join McCarter & English from Day Pitney. Levy concentrates on patent prosecution, licensing, strategic planning, and litigation, and will be based out of New York.  Brown, who will also work in New York, is a former nuclear engineer and focuses on litigation, interferences, and prosecution in a variety of fields. McWha has both private practice and in-house experience, and specializes in a variety of matters including telecommunications, media and technology, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and computer software. He will divide his time between the firm’s New York and Newark offices.

McDermott Will & Emery
has bolstered its restructuring and insolvency practice in New York with the hire of ERICH EISENEGGER as a partner. Eisenegger, who was previously at DLA Piper, focuses on advising both foreign and US financial institutions on restructurings and related transactions.

In Washington, DC, McKenna Long & Aldridge has gained JOHN “JAY” HEATH as counsel in the firm’s MLA’s government contracts practice. Formerly a counsel to the minority staff of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, Heath has experience in congressional investigations and matters related to defense, including the annual defense authorization bill and defense acquisition programs.

O’Melveny & Myers has added CAROL ABERNATHY as a counsel in Los Angeles and LISBETH “LIBBY” SAVILL as a partner in London. As a member of the firm’s health care and white collar defense and corporate investigations practice group, Abernathy will represent health care clients in a range of litigation and regulatory matters. She was previously at Advanced Bionics, where she served as a general counsel and senior quality systems director. Meanwhile, Savill, who specializes in matters related to film, television, and audio visual library sales and acquisitions, will join the firm’s entertainment, sports and media practice. She was formerly the head of Olswang’s film and television team.

Former in-house counsel for Hilton Worldwide Inc. MARK ROBERTSON has joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan as a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Robertson has experience in an array of legal and business issues, among which include joint ventures, antitrust and competition, crisis management, global branding and public relations, and franchising and development.

Intellectual property litigation attorney BARRY HERMAN is the newest partner in Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice‘s Baltimore office. Herman specializes in patent litigation before district courts and the International Trade Commission, as well as litigating trade secret misappropriation, trademark infringement, and intellectual property disputes. He was previously at Oblon Spivak McClelland Maier & Neustadt.
