When Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom was selecting a new executive partner in 1993, Robert Sheehan wasn’t an obvious choice. But in the end he got the job because people trusted him. “He was viewed as someone who would have the institution’s best interests at heart and not his own,” explains Earl Yaffa, the firm’s managing director.
For the next 15 years, Sheehan guided Skadden through a period of tremendous growth and change, all the while keeping the firm on an even keel. During Sheehan’s tenure, from 1994 to 2009, Skadden more than doubled in size, expanding from roughly 900 lawyers to more than 1,800; its revenue jumped more than threefold; it evolved into an international firm; and it cemented its position as one of the most successful law firms ever.
