When 37 Occidental College students, faculty, and alumni filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights against the school in April for mishandling sexual assault cases, the school called on Pepper Hamilton partner Gina Smith.
Smith has become a sort of guru for colleges and universities looking to reform sexual assault culture on campus. Seven years after launching a practice focused on institutional response to sexual misconduct and assault, Smith and fellow Pepper partner Leslie Gomez now advise more than 50 colleges and universities, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Amherst College, and Occidental, on complying with federal and local laws on reporting and responding to sexual assault complaints.
