The American Lawyer Global Citizenship Awards honor global matters dedicated to the spirit of pro bono and social responsibility. Some helped to finance for-profit social-purpose corporations—marketing herbal tonics from the rainforest communities of Peru and infant incubators that draw heat from the human body. Others focused the power of a global law firm to help a single cause (antitrafficking) or to help a single nation (Sierra Leone) along the road to equitable development.
Our thirtieth and last award is a lifetime achievement pro bono prize for DLA Piper's nonprofit affiliate, New Perimeter: for attending creatively to the real legal needs of 16 less developed and postconflict countries on three continents, and helping those nations to train a new generation of leaders in the law, from supreme court justice to village paralegal.
