The Securities and Exchange Commission charged three former senior managers at Birmingham-based Regions Bank, Alabama’s biggest lender, with fraud on Wednesday, saying they intentionally misclassified bad loans on the bank’s balance sheet.

The misclassifications led Regions Financial Corp., the bank’s publicly held holding company, to overstate its income and earnings per share in financial reports, the SEC alleges.
