LavaFlow Inc., a Citigroup unit that operates an alternative trading system, agreed to pay $5 million to settle charges accusing the company of failing to properly protect the private trading information of its customers, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced on Friday.

LavaFlow’s payment of $5 million includes a $2.85 million penalty, which according to the SEC is thus far its largest involving an alternative trading system.
