Baker & McKenzie is somewhat of an anomaly among U.S. firms in London. With 77 offices in 47 countries, and fewer than 20 percent of its lawyers based in the United States, the title of “U.S. firm” no longer feels entirely appropriate to Baker & McKenzie. (We almost excluded it from this feature on that basis.) But while Baker & McKenzie has evolved into what is quantifiably the world’s most global law firm, when it came to London in 1961 as the first U.S. firm to launch in the city, it was very much American.

The fact that Baker’s London office is now seen as an established part of the local legal firmament, rather than an outpost of a U.S. firm, is therefore a clear indication of its success. Indeed, Baker is the only U.S.-based firm named by research company Acritas among the 10 strongest legal brands in the city. In the 2014 rankings, Baker moved from ninth to sixth, placing it ahead of Magic Circle firm Allen & Overy. (The rankings are based on feedback collected from 130 general counsel, who judged firms on such criteria as “top-of-mind awareness” and which they would be most likely to turn to for high-value work.)
