John Howe remembers sitting in his office last August and laughing as he read the press release, the first of many similar Internet stories about himself and his investment advisory firm, Old Hill Partners. A marketing assistant had found it with a Google alert. Posted on PR Nation, the release came from Whistleblowers International (WBI), a nonprofit based in Stockholm.

“According to court records obtained by WBI,” it said, “a Boston whistleblower has turned Old Hill Partners, its predecessor Patriot Group, its affiliate funds, and Mr. Howe personally, into both the IRS and SEC, with filings to other agencies pending.”
