Alan Schnitzer, a former corporate Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York, was named Tuesday as the new CEO of New York-based insurance giant The Travelers Cos.

Reached Wednesday by The Am Law Daily, Schnitzer, 49, said he loved practicing law at Simpson Thacher, but has also enjoyed being “stretched and challenged” in different ways in his journey to the business side. At Simpson Thacher, Schnitzer served as primary outside counsel to Travelers, taking the lead counseling the company on its landmark combination with Citicorp in 1998, a $70 billion megamerger that created financial services colossus Citigroup.
