TransCanada NAFTA Claims
TransCanada Corp. is taking the United States to court. The Calgary-based company has filed a constitutional challenge in U.S. district court in Houston as well as a notice of intent to initiate a claim of approximately $15 billion in damages under Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement over the Obama administration’s rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

The court actions, both filed Jan. 6, respond to the U.S. government’s denial on Nov. 6, 2015, of a presidential permit, a necessary component before proceeding with the $8 billion pipeline that was to connect Canada’s oil sands to American refineries on the Gulf Coast.
