Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom is representing solar energy giant SunEdison Inc. in the largest bankruptcy filing so far this year. The Chapter 11 case should also be among the most litigious—if recent courtroom disputes between holding companies and their operating units are any indication.

With $16.1 billion in liabilities and $20.7 billion in assets, the bankruptcy by Maryland Heights, Missouri-based SunEdison is larger than that of Peabody Energy Corp., the world’s largest privately owned coal company, which listed $11 billion in assets in turning to Jones Day to handle its own Chapter 11 filing earlier this month.
