1 Irell & Manella
 Los Angeles

With two of the largest year-over-year increases of 2016, Irell shot up from No. 18 in 2015 to top this year’s A-List. The firm’s rise was due largely to a 78-point leap in its associate satisfaction score and a 44-point jump in the double-weighted pro bono category. In fact, Irell’s strongest showing was in pro bono, where the firm earned a near-perfect score of 199. Its weakest area was diversity, where it scored 184—still strong, but just a one-point increase from a year ago.
