Scott Curran had what many would consider a dream in-house job. The Clinton Foundation, the global charity founded by Bill Clinton, named Curran its general counsel in 2014. It was an impressive achievement for Curran, who had joined the foundation eight years earlier as a 30-year-old intern and worked his way to the top of its legal department.

But in February, after two years as GC, Curran decided to do something different. He founded Beyond Advisers, a consulting firm that helps nonprofits maximize their impact. The firm also advises companies on corporate social responsibility and law firms on pro bono efforts and other social impact projects. Curran is the only full-time employee, but he often works with what he calls a “core team” of three other consultants.
