Garvey Schubert Barer, a 100-lawyer Seattle-based firm that grew out of an $800 investment by three law school graduates in the 1960s, has had more than its usual share of the public spotlight this year. The firm represented the Bernie Sanders campaign during Sanders’ fight to secure the Democratic presidential nomination. It is still grapping with a $75 million malpractice suit brought by rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. And its marijuana practice has grown as more states legalize the drug.
This year, Garvey is celebrating its 50th anniversary. This week, it announced the election of a new chair, Greg Duff, who heads the firm’s hospitality, travel and tourism group. Duff officially took over on July 1 from former chair Anne Preston, a labor and employment specialist who left for an in-house position.
