With the 2016 Summer Olympic Games underway in Rio de Janeiro, this week brought news of a sizeable M&A deal with ties to the 2010 Winter Games held in Vancouver.

On Monday, Broomfield, Colorado-based Vail Resorts Inc. announced that it has agreed to acquire Canada’s Whistler Blackcomb Holdings Inc., which operated sites used for games in Vancouver six years ago, in a $1.06 billion cash-and-stock deal. Expected to close this fall, the merger creates a ski resort giant with destinations in Australia, Canada and the United States.
