The 2024 Midlevel Associates Survey
The Midlevel Associates Survey tracks overall job satisfactions of more than 3,500 third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates across Big Law. The survey results in a ranking of firms based on their overall score, which is made up of scores in 12 different categories, including compensation and benefits; training and guidance; relationships with partners and other associates; interest in and satisfaction level with the work; the firm’s policy on billable hours; and management’s openness about firm strategies and partnership chances. This year, associates expressed some concern over how their firms handled a downward shift in the market. In this package, you will find analysis of the survey results, the overall rankings and rankings on firms' technology, and highlights from associates' open-ended responses on what their firms can do better. -
The 2024 A-List
The A-List is The American Lawyer's ranking of those law firms that are operating on all cylinders, showing high performance not just on financial metrics, but across talent, diversity and social responsibility as well. The 2024 Pro Bono Report
The Pro Bono Report is the definitive ranking of pro bono efforts across Am Law 200 firms. Published each July through the efforts of Law.com Compass and The American Lawyer editorial team, this report tracks the total number of pro bono hours performed both domestically and internationally as well as the average number of hours per lawyer and the number of lawyers who performed more than 20 hours of pro bono service for the year.
Across 120 responding law firms, pro bono hours continued on a steady climb in 2023, though these investments still don't quite match levels seen pre-pandemic and in 2020. Pro bono work at responding firms totaled 5.15 million hours in 2023—2.8% more than 2022, and 12.2% more than 2021. However, the total for 2023 is still well behind the 2020 mark of 5.45 million hours. Nevertheless, firms tackled a range of issues last year, working on behalf of veterans, migrants, members of the LGBTQ+ community and the incarcerated.
Below are all the rankings and analysis from the 2024 Pro Bono Report, including a special look at firms' investment in asylum work. The past three years of the Pro Bono Report can be found at the bottom of this page. -
The 2024 Diversity Scorecard
The Diversity Scorecard evaluates firms based on their ability to attract, retain and promote talent from demographics that are historically underrepresented in the legal industry. For the first time this year, the Women in Law Scorecard and LGBTQ+ Scorecard, traditionally published in tandem with the NLJ 500, are being published with the Diversity Scorecard. Going forward, all three scorecards will continue to be released annually as a single package.
Overall, Big Law's attorney ranks have gotten steadily (if incrementally) more diverse each year. Still, we know that aggregated statistics don't tell the whole story. Firm-to-firm stories vary significantly. In these scorecards, firms are scored based on their representation from these groups--overall, but also in partnership and leadership roles.
We hope these scorecards inspire ongoing progress on these fronts, but we are also mindful that DEI is a "team sport" in which the best kind of progress is industrywide progress. -

The 2024 Am Law 100
The Am Law 100 is the definitive ranking of the 100 largest law firms in the United States. Published each spring through the efforts of Law.com Compass and The American Lawyer editorial team, this report offers firm-by-firm data on key financial metrics and deep analysis of the cohort's performance and what it means for the rest of the market. Information includes an examination of revenue, profits, per-lawyer metrics, headcount growth and much more. The 2024 Am Law 100 explores the financial, market and management trends that led to many firms rebounding nicely from prior year declines brought on by economic and market conditions, softening demand and other challenges. While not a wholesale return to the historic highs of 2020 and 2021, fiscal 2023 brought collective growth in revenue, revenue per lawyer and profitability metrics. Meanwhile, equity partner ranks stayed the same size or even contracted, as nonequity partners (poised to outnumber their equity counterparts in the coming years) become more numerous. Below you will find our various rankings of The 2024 Am Law 100 along with several pieces of analysis of the market. The past three years of Am Law 100 reports can be found at the bottom of this page. -

Not only do we track the static number of racially and ethnically diverse lawyers and partners in law firms, but we now also look at the percentage of minorities in leadership roles, in equity partner positions and among the hires, departures and promotions of partners.
