Over the past decade, there has been an immense increase in the popularity of health applications and connected health devices as more and more of consumers’ health information is shared online. Digital health tools, from period trackers to fitness assessments, are well-integrated into daily life. However, despite the sensitivity of this personal health data, much of its collection and processing falls outside the protections of HIPAA.
