Understanding the Right to Privacy in the Electronic WorkplaceWhile advances in technology allow employers to gain almost unfettered access to employees' e-mail and to monitor their Internet use, the law may not. Just one example: The New Jersey Supreme Court has held that state employees have a right to privacy in the workplace. Such rulings demonstrate how crucial it is for employers to understand the ways in which they can monitor workplace computer activity without violating employee rights.
