Equifax Data Breach: What Happened and What's Next?Over a period of months, hackers apparently accessed people's names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, addresses, driver's license numbers, and in some cases, credit card numbers and personally identifiable information (PII). Although the cybersecurity breach occurred from mid-May through July, it was apparently discovered on July 29. To the chagrin of many people, including government officials, on Sept. 7, Equifax made its first public release warning the American public of the breach, writes Gavin Gaukroger.
