Lehman Lawyers Look for Work as Clifford Chance Acts on Barclays Asset Hunt

More than 50 U.K. lawyers at Lehman Brothers are searching for work in the wake of the bank's shock bankruptcy filing. Specialist in-house recruiters are now working in and around the bank's London offices amid widespread expectations that Lehman's 5,000 U.K. staff will be made redundant. Recruiters working with Lehman lawyers said that there had been no formal notice of redundancy for the group's lawyers, but it is expected that a U.K. legal team estimated at between 50 and 60 lawyers will lose their jobs.

A trio of London firms has seen a mega-mandate come to an end, after the collapse of the $66 billion hostile takeover of Rio Tinto by BHP Billiton. U.K. firm Lovells has bolstered its Italian capital markets practice with the addition of a two-partner team from Simmons & Simmons. Corrado Fiscale and Federico Del Monte, who both specialize in structured finance and securitization work, will join Lovells in Milan along with two associates and will co-head the firm's Italian capital markets practice. Lloyds Says HBOS Deal Could Affect Law Jobs

Lloyds TSB confirmed on Thursday that there could be legal job losses as a result of its $22.1 billion takeover of stricken lender HBOS. The bank, which unveiled details of the union early Thursday, said it is expecting to make cost savings of around $1.8 billion a year through the merger by 2011. Head office operations including legal, HR, risk and finance departments are among those facing consolidation at the two U.K. banks, which are acknowledged to have substantial crossover between their operations.
