Jury Awards $5.85M in Former Fresno State Female Coach's Discrimination Suit

A jury has awarded a former Fresno State volleyball coach $5.85 million in damages, ruling that the California school discriminated against her for speaking up on behalf of female athletes. Lindy Vivas was fired in 2004. The jury award, which took into account back wages, future lost pay and emotional distress, is likely the largest ever granted to a coach suing for retaliation under Title IX, a landmark federal law requiring gender equity in scholastic athletics, said Vivas' lawyer.

Contaminated Taco Bell Scallions Traced to California

The scallions suspected in the E. coli outbreak linked to Taco Bell came from a Southern California grower, according to an official with Ready Pac Produce, the company that processed them for the restaurant chain. This is the second E. coli scare to hit Ready Pac in the past four months. In September, spinach with the Ready Pac label was among dozens of brands pulled from the shelves following a nationwide E. coli outbreak.
