Scalable Tools to Help You Develop The In-House Legal Department of the Future

Elaine Karp is the Senior Director of Legal Operations at Baxter International, a Fortune 500 medical device company. She is responsible for global legal operations, financial management, and technology management. She manages cross-functional teams to deliver tools, programs, and processes, including legal spend management, knowledge management, matter management, and contract management. Elaine sets departmental KPIs and other metrics, ensuring continuous process improvement, drives the delivery of innovative technologies, and ensures every member of the legal team has what they need to provide the highest service across the organization.

Prior to Baxter, Elaine was the Director of Legal Operations for R1 RCM, revenue cycle management service provider to the healthcare industry. At R1, she built a comprehensive legal operations infrastructure following an acquisition.

Before R1 RCM, Elaine ran legal finance and operations at The Kraft Heinz Company, where she was responsible for global budgeting (planning, negotiation, and reporting) within Kraft Heinz’s zero-based budgeting model. Elaine led legal support IT system implementations, negotiated and managed vendor agreements, realized opportunities for departmental cost reductions, and managed legal KPIs for all legal staff around the world.

Elaine has a degree in Economics from Northwestern University.

Tim is currently General Counsel for National Salvage & Service Corporation, a national demolition and asset recovery company headquartered in Bloomington, Indiana. National Salvage offers the railroad and utility industries with railroad tie, utility pole, and rail recycling and disposal services; provides for the demolition of industrial sites and power plants; and also owns and operates two biomass powerplants in Michigan. As in-house counsel, Tim oversees all legal matters and advises the president and leadership team on organization strategy, development, and operations. Prior to National Salvage, Tim was an executive and government affairs professional for three separate statewide trade associations lobbying on behalf of the manufacturing and utility industries at the Indiana General Assembly.

Prior to working as a lobbyist, Tim served as President of SRI Inc., a privately-held, multi-state technology and real estate tax auction company headquartered in Indianapolis. He also served in the administration of former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels as Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, the state agency that oversees the property tax assessment and local government budget process.

Tim’s early career included four years of active duty service in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps where he prosecuted numerous courts-martial and administrative discharge board proceedings.

Tim earned his JD from the Valparaiso University School of Law and his BA in Political Science from Indiana University-South Bend. He currently lives in Brownsburg, Indiana with his wife of 20 years, Kristin, and their nine children.

Christopher Hines advises on a range of data privacy issues, including global privacy compliance, security/cybersecurity, breach response and issues related to data use. He also counsels high technology companies and technology-enabled companies on a wide range of licensing and technology-related transactions, including counseling clients on matters involving: software licensing, reseller relationships, cloud services (private and public cloud relationships), joint ventures, privacy and data security, IP asset commercialization and monetization and IP-focused M&A transactions.

Formerly a computer programmer, Christopher particularly enjoys counseling clients on the development of intellectual property assets, focusing on acquiring and managing patent portfolios in a variety of industries, including: software, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), networking and social networking platforms, machinelearning, blockchain, image processing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), fiber optics, single-sign-on security, virtual machines, Internet and communication protocols, cloud computing, databases, Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), streaming technologies and related services, mobile applications and medical devices, among others.

Christopher advises new businesses and early-stage technology companies on common intellectual property legal concerns that emerge in the early stages of growth. He works with such companies to develop best practices and achieve meaningful global IP strategies.
