As consumers and institutional investors pay more and more attention to corporate activities with respect to ESG, the heads of legal departments and their teams are finding that the development of ESG policies and execution of the same is becoming their responsibility. During this discussion, we will focus on recent developments with the ESG as well as what the legal departments need to ultimately propel their organizations forward on this item.

Raymond “Rusty” Pomeroy is an environmental lawyer with a broad, multifaceted skill set developed in private practice and as an in-house counsel for the commercial real estate investment division of a U.S.-based multinational conglomerate.

Rusty has an extensive track record helping clients identify, understand and mitigate environmental risks in complex commercial real estate transactions, financing and commodities transactions, and corporate mergers and acquisitions in a pragmatic and commercial way.

His practice includes advising clients on green and sustainable energy issues, climate change, and the implications and opportunities stemming from New York City’s Climate Mobilization Act, among other laws.

Rusty has counseled clients regarding site cleanups and brownfields projects in multiple jurisdictions across the U.S., including New York’s Brownfields Cleanup Program, New York City’s Voluntary Cleanup Program and New Jersey’s Industrial Site Recovery Act (ISRA).

Casey Nault has over 20 years of experience as a corporate and securities lawyer, including prior in-house positions with Starbucks and Washington Mutual and law firm experience with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. His experience includes securities compliance and SEC reporting, corporate governance and compliance, mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings and other strategic transactions, general regulatory compliance, cross-border issues, land use and environmental and overseeing complex litigation.

Mr. Nault has a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Washington and received his law degree from the University of Southern California Law School.

Peter Castelli is Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of POET, the world’s largest producer of biofuels and other bioproducts. After graduating from law school, Pete began his career at a law firm in Indiana. For nearly 20 years, he worked at Tate & Lyle, a global producers of food and industrial ingredients, in various legal and commercial leadership roles, including Senior Vice President and Global Head of Legal.

Before joining POET, Pete served as Senior Counsel for Winston & Strawn in Chicago. Pete joined POET in 2020 and is part of their executive leadership team. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his law degree from Indiana University.
