The Use and Ethical Considerations of Technology in Remote Legal Practice During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

James C. White is a practitioner with J.C. White Law Group PLLC in Chapel Hill, N.C., and represents debtors in bankruptcy, taking on banks, large financial institutions and other corporations. He has been recognized by his peers as one of the top civil litigation lawyers in the state in Super Lawyers, as well as one of the top business bankruptcy lawyers in the state in the Legal Elite and The Best Lawyers in America. In addition, North Carolina Lawyers Weekly named him a Leader in the Law, recognizing him as an influential individual within the state’s legal community.

Mr. White is Board Certified in Business Bankruptcy Law and serves as a bankruptcy trustee in small business cases in the Middle District of North Carolina. He is also an NCDRC Certified Mediator focused on mediating bankruptcy and financial litigation cases.

Before forming JC White Law Group, Mr. White was an attorney at one of the state’s largest law firms handling business litigation and bankruptcy. Mr. White received his B.A. from St. John’s College, his M.A. in public policy from Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, and his J.D. from Duke University School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of Law & Contemporary Problems.

Carrianne J.M. Basler, CPA, CIRA is a managing director based in the Chicago office of Alix- Partners, LLP. She has more than 25 years of financial consulting experience combined with handson management in the areas of contingency planning, contract negotiations, litigation management, treasury, business planning and risk management.

Ms. Basler has served in an advisory capacity to senior management in the areas of business plan feasibility and financial strategy, lender negotiations, reorganization plan development, divestiture strategies and post-confirmation administration. Her recent cases include serving on the management team for Motors Liquidation Company (aka “Old GM”) and advising the debtors of David’s Bridal, Pacific Drilling, C&J Energy, Altegrity, Eastman Kodak and Dana Corp. She most recently served as CFO of Aceto Corp. during its chapter 11 process. Ms. Basler is currently serving as the worldwide chair of the International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC), and she is a member of ABI, the Turnaround Management Association and the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors. She regularly speaks and has published numerous articles concerning turnaround management and reorganization matters.

Ms. Basler received her B.B.A. in accounting from the University of Wisconsin.

Hannah’s practice focuses on helping businesses and individuals resolve their financial troubles.

Upon graduating from the William & Mary College of Law, Hannah practiced law in Dayton, Ohio. Upon returning “home” to the Shenandoah Valley and prior to joining Hoover Penrod, Hannah practiced as a sole-practitioner. Hannah routinely represents businesses and individuals in bankruptcy proceedings and creditor negotiations. Her practice areas include bankruptcy, debtor and creditor rights, and general corporate work. In addition to representing businesses and individuals in bankruptcy proceedings, Hannah has represented national and regional banks in all aspects of commercial collections, including restructuring obligations, asset liquidations and dispositions, and foreclosure. Hannah is also a member of the panel of Chapter 7 trustees for the Western District of Virginia.

Clients and colleagues alike turn to Steve when a bankruptcy case is not likely to settle. A seasoned trial lawyer, he is widely recognized for his solutions-oriented approach which involves working closely with clients to first see the end result and then, map out a plan to get there. He focuses his practice on business bankruptcy litigation, representing creditors, investors, distressed debt lenders, trustees, committees, and business entities litigating disputes in bankruptcy court.

Steve received his B.S. in multinational business operations from Florida State University and received his J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law where he continues to guest lecture. He is board certified by the American Board of Certification in both creditors' rights law and business bankruptcy law and is a member of the Florida, California, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico (federal) bars.

Steve serves on the Board of Directors for the American Bankruptcy Institute and the American Board of Certification. He works on several committees and task forces and routinely volunteers and speaks at seminars. Additionally, he serves as the judge advocate to the Coronado Yacht Club in Coronado, California, and volunteers in providing pro bono bankruptcy and insolvency services and training for United States Navy service members, including Judge Advocate General officers and staff.
