St. Paul, Minn.-based 3M Co. announced the appointment of Marschall Smith as general counsel and senior vice president of legal affairs. Smith, who is currently vice president, general counsel and secretary of Brunswick Corp., will start on July 16, replacing Richard Ziegler, who is retiring.

In the past, Smith has served as general counsel for Digitas Inc. and American Medical International Inc. and was with Baxter International Inc. for 11 years. A San Antonio native, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Princeton University, University of Virginia Law School and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

George Buckley, chairman, president and CEO of 3M, is also a former Brunswick employee.

“[Smith's] experience in many types of businesses makes him an ideal match for the tremendous product and technology diversity of 3M,” Buckley said in a press release. “I know he will make great contributions in helping us drive our growth agenda forward.”
