Lawsuit Accuses Accenture of Discrimination for Using Background Checks to Screen for Criminal Records

A class action lawsuit filed in federal district court in New York on Thursday alleges that the global management consulting firm Accenture conducts background checks that discriminate against black and Latino job applicants.
According to a press release from attorneys for the plaintiff, Roberto J. Arroyo, the firm violates Title VII “by rejecting or firing qualified individuals who have criminal records even where the criminal history has no bearing on the individual's fitness or ability to perform the job.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) says a policy of rejecting applicants based on their criminal history may discriminate against blacks and Latinos because they have disproportionately higher conviction rates than the general population.
