A group representing Los Angeles-area medical marijuana dispensaries filed suit against the city last month after the city passed an ordinance earlier this year limiting the number of shops to 186. Last week, L.A. issued notices to 439 shops, requiring them to close by June 7.

Although there is evidence proving that medical marijuana helps with some ailments, many residents in shop locations have made complaints about the stores being a public nuisance. The complaints say that residents have noticed customers shopping for recreational and not medical purposes.

The organization representing 130 of the shops that the city ordered closed said in a statement that the L.A. could be facing years of litigation because of the regulation.
