GC Appointments
Churchill Downs has appointed Alan K. Tse general counsel and executive vice president. Tse was previously general counsel and vice president of LG Electronics Mobilecomm U.S.A. Inc.
Juan Cartagena joins Latino Justice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund as president and general counsel. As a young man, Cartagena interned for Latino Justice. Prior to returning to the organization as general counsel, Cartagena served as general counsel and vice president for Advocacy at the Community Service Society. He also previously served as a judge in New Jersey.
The American Humane Association has named Stephen T. Kaminski general counsel and senior vice president. Before joining the nonprofit organization, Kaminski was vice president of legal affairs at Discovery Communications.
Playboy Enterprises has appointed Rachel Sagan executive vice president, business affairs and general counsel. She replaces Howard Shapiro, who will now serve the company as special counsel. Sagan was previously general counsel, vice president and secretary of California-based entertainment and information company Freedom Communications.
Michael B. Weinstein has been appointed general counsel of the State Universities Retirement System of Illinois. Prior to joining the State Universities Retirement System, Weinstein spent more than nine years as associate general counsel for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.
Tulsa, Oklahoma-based real estate services company Senior Star has named Donald L. Detrich general counsel and senior vice president. Detrich has worked as counsel for Senior Star's owners in various ventures since 1976 and worked at law firm Eller & Detrich, which he co-founded.
Douglas Graham has been named general counsel, vice president and corporate secretary of Oil-Dri Corp. of America. Graham previously served as assistant general counsel of Commonwealth Edison Co., a subsidiary of Exelon Corp.
Matthew L. Biben joins JPMorgan Chase as general counsel of the bank's home lending unit. Biben was formerly deputy general counsel at Bank of New York Mellon, where he worked for more than six years, and also spent time as a federal prosecutor.
Brand New Day Inc. has named Christopher D. Hopkins general counsel. Hopkins comes to the company from The Law Office of Christopher D. Hopkins, a boutique law firm in New Jersey that specializes in real estate, land use and environmental law.
Laura Witte will become Cargill's general counsel, vice president and corporate secretary, effective June 1. Witte, who has been with the company for 32 years, currently serves as general counsel and vice president for the company's North American-based businesses. Prior to her work as general counsel for Cargill's North American-based businesses, Witte also served as general counsel for the company's Asia Pacific and
European businesses.
David H. Brill has been named general counsel, senior vice president and secretary of American Stock Transfer & Trust Co. Previously, Brill was vice president and principal legal counsel at Thomson Reuters.
Leonard R. Stein has been appointed as general counsel and senior vice president of software provider Splunk. Stein was previously president and chief legal officer at Jackson Family Enterprises.
Omnicare Inc. has named Alexander Kayne general counsel and senior vice president. Kayne served as interim general counsel for the company while simultaneously working as a partner with Dewey & LeBoeuf's New York litigation department.
Carol DiBattiste has been appointed general counsel, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Geeknet Inc. DiBattiste previously served as senior vice president Privacy and Security at Reed Elsevier, Inc., Lexis Nexis' parent company.
NOR flash memory provider Spansion Inc. has named Scot Griffin as general counsel and senior vice president. Prior to joining Spansion, Griffin held senior legal positions with Tessera Technologies and Intel.
Neil Brodsky joins VION Receivable Investments as general counsel. Before joining VION, Brodsky held senior legal positions with Granite Telecommunications as senior corporate counsel, and EMCC/Equiant as vice president and general counsel.
Other In-House Moves
RashIa M. Buttar has been named corporate secretary of Patriot Coal. Buttar joined Patriot Coal in 2007 as assistant general counsel and was promoted to associate general counsel and vice president in 2009. Prior to joining Patriot Coal, Buttar was an assistant general counsel at TALX Corp.
Evolution Marketing Research has promoted Daniel R. Slawe to the role of chief operating officer. Slawe will continue to serve as general counsel for the company, the job he has performed since 2009. Before moving in-house, Slawe was a commercial litigator.
Cable company Suddenlink has named Amy Brown as senior counsel. Prior to joining Suddenlink, Brown was an attorney at St. Louis firm McMahon Berger, which she joined in 2006.
Crawford & Co. has promoted two attorneys to associate general counsel, a new position in the company. Tami E. Stevenson has been named vice president and associate general counsel of operations and R. Eric Powers will serve as corporate vice president and associate general counsel as well as assistant corporate secretary. Both Stevenson and Powers will continue to hold their previous positions in the company. Stevenson will continue to act as general counsel of Broadspire, a subsidiary of Crawford that deals with workers compensation claims, and Powers will continue his work on corporate legal matters within the company.
John F. Kuntz has been promoted to chief administrative officer of The Provident Bank. Kuntz will continue to serve in his current role as executive vice president and general counsel. He has been with Provident since 2001 and was appointed general counsel in 2005. Prior to joining Provident, Kuntz was general counsel at the former Summit Bank.
KCI Concepts Inc. has promoted John Bibb to general counsel. Bibb has served as associate general counsel for KCI for the past eight years. Prior to joining KCI, Bibb practiced in the San Antonio, Texas firm Cox & Smith.
Martin Kerckhoff has been named deputy general counsel of American Water. Kerckhoff has been with the company for six years and previously served as regional general counsel for the central region and as divisional general counsel for the company's western division.
Law Firm Moves
Cohen & Grigsby has announced that Christopher N. Davies will join the firm as director of the real estate practice group. Before joining Cohen & Grigsby, Davies was on the faculty at University of Miami Law Center Institute on Condominium and Cluster Developments.
Former general counsel James Cartoni joins San Diego-based corporate and securities law firm Kinetic Counsel PC as a principal. Cartoni was previously general counsel of biotechnology company Halozyme Therapeutics Inc.
Tressler LLP has announced the addition of former general counsel and CEO Eric J. Emerson to its new trucking & transportation practice group. Emerson was previously president
and CEO of Tidewater Transit Co. and general counsel for Tidewater and affiliated companies.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
