AT&T Inc. recently learned a valuable lesson well known to many young children: Respect your elders.

Yesterday AT&T settled a nationwide lawsuit with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in which the agency accused the telecommunications company of age discrimination. The EEOC sued AT&T in August 2009 for allegedly refusing to rehire nearly 50,000 of employees who had retired from the company under three different retirement programs between 1998 and 2005.

As part of the settlement, AT&T must end all prohibitions against rehiring retired employees and update its databases to ensure retired workers aren't discriminated against in hiring processes. The company also must certify annually in writing that it is complying with the agreement.
