GC Appointments

The Securities and Exchange Commission named Geoffrey Aronow general counsel. Aronow previously spent four and a half years as a partner at Bingham McCutchen. Other law firms at which Aronow has worked include Arnold & Porter and Heller Ehrman. He also served in the public sector between 1995 and 1999 as director of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's enforcement division.

Edward Lazarus was named the general counsel of the Tribune Co. Lazarus previously served as the Federal Communications Commission's chief of staff from 2009 until February 2012. His prior work experience also includes stints as a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld—where he chaired the firm's national litigation steering committee—and as a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.

The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) promoted Dave Prouty to the GC spot. Prouty has served as the MLBPA's chief labor counsel since 2008, prior to which he spent 22 years at UNITE HERE, an international union that represents the textile and restaurant industry.

Marjorie Loeb was promoted to the role of senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Chrysler Group. Loeb joined the company in 2010 as an assistant general counsel. Prior to that, she was an assistant general counsel and secretary for corporate securities at Delphi Automotive Systems and a principal at Miro Weiner & Kramer.

Francine Rosenberger is now general counsel of Steben & Co., a provider of managed futures funds. Rosenberger most recently was an equity partner at K&L Gates, where she advised clients on the formation, structuring and operation of investment companies, exchange-traded funds and commodity pools.

Monty Sarhan joined World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. as general counsel and senior vice president. Sarhan comes to the entertainment company from Viacom Media Networks, where he served as senior vice president of business and legal affairs. Before joining Viacom, he was the founder and CEO of Cracked Entertainment.

Max Ochoa joined data management company Turn as general counsel and corporate secretary. Ochoa joins Turn from the diversified media company Cox Enterprises, where he was general counsel and vice president of human resources. His prior work experience also includes general counsel postings at Adify and Aliph and an associate general counsel position at TiVo.

Jesse Gary was named executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Century Aluminum Co., where he has worked since 2010 as associate general counsel. Prior to joining the aluminum supplier, Gary practiced law at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory appointed Anne Troutman general counsel. Troutman joined the lab as deputy general counsel in March 2010. She previously worked at General Electric Co., Arthur D. Little and the Battelle Memorial Institute.

P. Jerome Richey was appointed general counsel of the University of Pittsburgh. From 1974 to 2005, Richey worked at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. He then transitioned to the corporate world as general counsel and corporate secretary at CONSOL Energy, where he later became chief legal officer and executive vice president of corporate projects.

John Ryder was named general counsel of the Republican National Committee. Ryder is a member of the law firm of Harris, Shelton, Hanover and Walsh, where his practice deals with bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Ryder has served as a national Republican committeeman since 1996—with the exception of a fouryear period from 2004 to 2008—and chaired the party's national redistricting committee after the 2010 U.S. Census.

Diversified Search, an executive search firm, hired Anthony Frick as vice president and general counsel. Frick most recently worked at Dechert, where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, corporate finance, and public company reporting and governance issues. He previously was a legal clerk for the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on House Administration.

Lisa Brown is now vice president and general counsel of Georgetown University. Brown has previously held several different titles as a White House attorney, including deputy counsel and counsel to former Vice President Al Gore, and, most recently, acting chief performance officer. Her prior work experience also includes stints as a partner at Goodwin Procter and as executive director of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy.

Alcon Entertainment, a film production company, promoted David Fierson to general counsel and executive vice president of business affairs. Fierson became the company's first in-house counsel when he joined as vice president of business affairs in 2006.

Grant Gardiner was named senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Nordion Inc. Gardiner joins the health science company after four years at BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd., where he has served as vice president, associate general counsel and corporate secretary to the company's board of directors.

Health care company Atossa Genetics Inc. hired Kyle Guse as chief financial officer, general counsel and secretary. Guse is a licensed Certified Public Accountant who began his career in 1987 at Deloitte & Touche. He also has worked as a partner at Heller Ehrman, McDermott Will & Emery and Baker Botts.

Indiana University Health, an academic medical health center partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine, named Mary Beth Claus general counsel. Claus most recently spent three and a half years as deputy chief legal officer and director of health care–regulatory at Cleveland Clinic. She previously was a partner at Faegre Baker Daniels.

Melissa Andrews was promoted to general counsel of the independent futures brokerage R.J. O'Brien & Associates. Andrews previously spent roughly two years as the company's associate general counsel. She also sits on the board of the Futures Industry Association's law and compliance division executive committee. Before going in-house, Andrews was an associate at Hogan Lovells and SNR Denton.

Eric Whitaker is now senior vice president and chief legal officer of SanDisk Corp. Whitaker previously was general counsel and corporate secretary at Tesla Motors Inc. He also held a general counsel position at Lexar Media, a technology and flash memory provider, where he also served as executive vice president.

Mark Harding, the general counsel of Barclays, will resign from his position after a decade with the bank. Before coming to Barclays, Harding was a partner in the law firm of Clifford Chance, where he concentrated on bank finance, capital markets and financial services regulation. He previously spent four years as general counsel of UBS's investment bank.

Law Firm Moves

Former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) general counsel Daniel Goelzer returned to Baker & McKenzie as a partner in its global corporate, securities and banking compliance practices. During his 13-year tenure at the agency, Goelzer was a founding member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, which oversees the auditors of public companies. After leaving the SEC, he was a partner at Baker & McKenzie from 1990 to 2002.

E. Donald Elliott joined Covington & Burling as senior of counsel in its environmental practice group. Elliott served as assistant administrator and general counsel of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency between 1989 and 1991. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where he chaired the firm's worldwide environmental, health and safety department.

David Kappos, the former director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Off ice, (PTO) joined Cravath & Moore as a partner. Kappos, who led the PTO for three and a half years, resigned his post there in January. Before joining the Obama administration, he spent more than 25 years at IBM Corp., where he served as vice president and assistant general counsel for intellectual property between 2003 and 2009.

Phelps Dunbar hired Jeffrey Baudier as a partner in its Baton Rouge office, where he will represent clients in the oil, gas and energy industries. Baudier most recently was president and CEO of Petra Nova, a subsidiary of NRG Energy Co., where he previously held the titles of regional president and general counsel of the South Central region.
