GC appointments

JPMorgan Chase & Co. appointed former U.S. Treasury Official Darius Kingsley co-general counsel of mortgage banking. Before this appointment, Kingsley was chief of the U.S. Treasury's Homeownership Preservation Office. His co-GC of mortgage banking will be Denise DesRosiers.

President Barack Obama re-nominated Lafe Solomon for another four-year term as general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Solomon came to the agency in 1972 as a field examiner and has worked for 10 different board members since then. He has been the NLRB's acting general counsel since June 2010, though at press time this position has not been confirmed by the Senate.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association appointed Gregory Goeckner chief operating officer and general counsel. Goeckner is well acquainted with the film industry—his previous work experience includes a stint as executive vice president and general counsel of the Motion Picture Association of America and working with several major film studios as special counsel at O'Melveny & Myers.

On July 1, G. Michael Pace's tenure as the inaugural general counsel of Roanoke College begins. Before that, he was an adjunct professor in Roanoke's public affairs department.  He has also served as president of the Virginia Bar Association and managing partner of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore in the past.

Ron Flagg joined the Legal Services Corp. (LSC) as general counsel, corporate secretary and vice president for legal affairs. LSC is a non-profit that provides low-income Americans with legal aid. Flagg previously chaired the Committee on Pro Bono and Public Interest Law at Sidley Austin, where he worked for 31 years.

Lewis Steverson came to glass and ceramics maker Corning Inc. from Motorola Inc. and Motorola Solutions Inc., where he spent 18 years. At Corning, he is senior vice president and general counsel. At Motorola he held titles including division counsel, senior counsel, corporate vice president and general counsel of Motorola Solutions.

Tech company Interactions Corp. has named Dean Breda general counsel. Breda previously was general counsel at ZipCar for three years. He has held the GC role at several other companies as well, including Demandware, VistaPrint and StorageNetworks. Back in his private practice days, Breda was an attorney at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault.

Dickens “Deke” Mathieu replaced Thomas Evans as senior vice president and general counsel of Syracuse University when Evans retired on June 30. Mathieu left his post as senior legal counsel at Tufts University to join Syracuse. He previously spent time as a U.S. attorney at the Department of Justice and in the labor and employment practice of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

Sales tax and compliance automation services provider Avalera hired Alesia Pinney as general counsel. Pinney comes to Avalera from Radiant Global Logistics Inc., where she was general counsel. She has also held the GC role at InfoSpace Inc. and drugstore.com.

Other In-House Moves

In May, Facebook Inc. announced the resignation of Ted Ullyot, the social network's inaugural and, so far, only general counsel. Ullyot had been with the company for nearly five years, seeing it through its initial public offering, patent battles and more. Before he was Facebook's GC, Ullyot served as an in-house attorney at AOL Time Warner and ESL Investments Inc., and in private practice as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis.

Law Firm Moves

Former General Electric Co. attorney John Fletcher joined Jones Walker as a partner in its tax and estates practice group and member of the state and local tax team. Before overseeing income and franchise tax audits at GE, Fletcher was a member of KPMG's state and local tax practice.
