The unemployment rate for younger veterans—those who served post-9/11—continues to exceed the national average. Jeffrey Kopp of Foley & Lardner says the U.S. Department of Labor is focusing on affirmative action initiatives to get this group employed, which means that federal contractors and subcontractors must ensure they’re complying with their obligation to hire veterans.

Certain regulations require job candidates to self-identify as veterans during the application and interview process. But a recent rule change means that contractors must invite veterans to self-identify at the post-offer stage, though they don’t need to ask which specific protected veteran category they belong to.
