It seems that companies have become more determined than ever to protect their intellectual property. But when the Fortune 500 feel compelled to pursue litigation—whether it be in district court, at the International Trade Commission or at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board—they don’t turn solely to large, established firms to do battle on their behalf.

To be sure, the top firm in this year’s ranking of law firms used for IP litigation, Perkins Coie, is a 1,000-plus-lawyer firm with 250 lawyers focused on IP matters alone. And according to our analysis, it handled seven IP litigation matters for the Fortune 500 in 2014.
