A wave of unionization in the digital media sector driven by millennial workers has labor attorneys buzzing—along with employers, labor strategists and even Wall Street. The biggest question is, will it motivate millennials in other industries to follow suit and rock the workplace world?

Organizers from the Writers Guild of America East have been on a hot streak, with workers at MTV News and Group Nine popular lifestyle site Thrillist declaring last month. And on Thursday, The Intercept, an investigative journalism site, recognized the union as the collective bargaining representative of its 32-member staff.

The union, which represents the writers who create television, film and digital media content, has now brought 11 digital publishing staffs into the fold since firing its first salvo with Gawker in April 2015. The list of companies includes the Huffington Post and VICE, the Gizmodo Media Group (formerly Gawker Media), Fusion, The Root, ThinkProgress and Salon.
